GRAVESTONE INSCRIPTIONS

at St John The Baptist Wonersh

The following inscriptions are largely taken from an index made by Dr R J Mesley in January 1980.   The Referen ce Numbers refer to his index system.  Numbers below 50 are those of memorials and tablets within the church and can now be viewed by selecting Church Building Tour.   Numbers above 100 are outside the church in the graveyard and these start in the NE corner in north/south rows clockwise around the church to the NW corner, and then around the wall.   Some stones are now displaced subsequent upon the building of the Selwyn Room in 1990.

Note that the graveyard was closed in 1861, thereafter Shamley Green being used until 1901 and then the new burial place at Blackheath.  The only exception is the Grantley (Norton) monument which was removed from the mausoleum to outside in 1901, and a few recent cremation memorials.  Some later inscriptions have been added to existing gravestones.   The graveyard is subject to the CofE Churchyard Regulations.

The earliest gravestone is marked 1742 and not many predate the 19th century, earlier stones possibly having been cleared away in the rebuilding of 1793.

The Rolls of Honour for 1914-18 and for the 1939-45 wars are Ref 6 and Ref 28 respectively.

Inscriptions for “In memory of” and “Sacred to the memory of” have been abbreviated to IMO and STTMO.
