Bible Reading Notes

Why Read the Bible?

The Bible is inspired by God and is his written word to us.  It is his primary method of communication with us and reading it can be an exciting challenging experience for us.  You may find it helpful to take a look at Colin Sowter’s recent sermon about Reading the Bible.

How do Bible Notes Help?

Bible Reading Notes help us stay close to God by:-

  • Helping us to be regular in our Bible reading.
  • Encouraging us to read more of the Bible ( not just our favorite bits)
  • Explaining the meaning of different passages.

We can obtain various different Notes which are published periodically.  These are obtained and distributed by Barbara Barter.  They are published by www.scriptureunion.org.uk unless shown otherwise.   There is a display of Bible reading notes in the Selwyn Room, to help select appropriate material, which include:-.

Encounter with  God   Scripture Union

  • Daily consecutive readings
  • Exposition by experienced Bible teachers
  • Introduction and review articles for each consecutive series enabling further study, reflection and response.
  • Featured articles addressing contemporary issues.
  • A dual programme covering the Bible in either one or six years.

Recommended by Colin Sowter and John Mash

Closer to God

  • A Bible reading with notes every day of the week- 5 main readings with 2 optional extras.
  • A framework for prayer, praise, reflection and action.
  • A colour bookmark to remove and keep for further meditation.

Recommended by Sam Taylor

Daily Bread    Scripture Union

  • A note for each day with Bible text on the page.
  • Easy to understand practical comments relating the Bible to everyday life.
  • Also available in large print.

Recommended by Margaret Slade and Barry Goldsmith

Click on the link above for online access.  Daily Bread is also now available as an electronic download so you can read it on the move, Pocket PC or Palm.
'Try it out, it works well and could encourage more people to read the Bible on their way to work.'
Rating: 5 stars (out of five) Church of England Newspaper .

The Word for Today

  • A theme is taken for the week
  • A verse is written out for the day above the comment so can be used on its own
  • Biblical references and further reading given.
  • Good for those who commute – easy to put in the briefcase.

Recommended by Gussie Walsh

Everyday with Jesus by CWR

  • Devotional
  • Dated Bible readings with passages for further study.
  • Further study gives two questions with relevant passages to explore.
  • Selwyn Hughes (Waverley Abbey) wrote many of these.

Recommended by Tessa Auty.
